Writing to your MP: am I wasting my time?

Every MP (Members of Parliament), no matter where they live, no matter what their political party, is there to represent their constituents in parliament and hold the government to account.

You may not know this, but you can call, visit and write to your MP. In fact, MPs normally hold ‘surgeries’ one day a week where you can meet them. It doesn’t matter if you voted for them, or even whether you agree with them. Every MP or their office are duty-bound to read your letter or email and they will respond to you – that is the bare minimum. They could then raise your concerns in parliament in a variety of ways, from debates to written parliamentary questions to formal letters to a minister.

Here are some top tips when contacting your MP:

1. Make it personal. Something written personally by you is the most effective way to catch their attention.

2. Be polite and respectful at all times.

3. Not satisfied with your MP’s response? Follow up and keep in touch to ask how they are continuing to voice your concerns.

4. Get your church or community involved.

5. Always send your name and address – they need to know you live in their constituency
