On Thursday 27 May from 7-8pm (BST) we’ll be gathering online for our annual prayer and protest for Eritrea.
We’ve held this event every May for the past 18 years to mark the anniversary of the closure of most churches in Eritrea, and the subsequent and continuing campaign of arrests of Christians from all denominations.
This year, we’ll also be praying for the crisis in Tigray, the region of Ethiopia which borders Eritrea. Around 50,000 people have died, and over 62,000 have been forced to flee the country since hostilities began last November. Unknown thousands have also been displaced internally. The Tigrayan people are experiencing horrific crimes – including sexual violence, bombings and killings – mostly at the hands of Eritrean soldiers, who are also killing, assaulting and forcibly returning thousands of Eritrean refugees to a country where their lives are almost certainly at risk.
Meanwhile Eritrea remains under a stringent lockdown, and the government is rounding up and forcing children as young as 15 to the frontlines of the war in Tigray, where many are dying.
Eritrea needs our prayers and solidarity, now more than ever.
This event is jointly organised by CSW, Church in Chains (Ireland), the Eritrean Orthodox Church in the UK, Human Rights Concern-Eritrea and Release Eritrea.
