We might know this popular tourist destination in the Indian Ocean for its beauty and serenity, but it's not all sunny down there.
An escalating political crisis came to a head on Tuesday 7 February, when a coup d'etat took place against democratically-elected President Mohamed Nasheed. He was forcibly removed from his post by rogue elements of the police and military working together with opposition politicians, certain holiday resort owners, and radical Islamists.
President Nasheed was a leading campaigner for democracy. His forceful removal has serious consequences for human rights and the rule of law in the Maldives, and proper democratic order must be restored swiftly.
We have been concerned by the developments and ask you to stand with us in prayer for this beautiful nation of islands.
If you are planning to travel to the Maldives, consider avoiding resorts owned by individuals with direct involvement in the coup. Find out more at www.maldivestraveladvisory.com
